Choosing a Welding Helmet
Posted September 27 2011When selecting a welding helmet that's right for you, sometimes the choices can be overwhelming. That's why the experts at Rock City Safety are here to help! When choosing which helmet will fit your needs, keep in mind there are two main categories of welding helmets:
1) Passive welding helmets are the value leader, because they provide an excellent level of protection at a very economical price. Most of our passive welding helmets come complete with a Shade 10 filter plate, so you're ready to go right out of the box!
2) Auto darkening welding helmets are popular for the welder who wants more convenience and/or control while welding. Sometimes referred to as quick-change helmets, an auto darkening filter (ADF) lens automatically switches from a light shade to a dark shade when the welding arc is struck. This is achieved by the use of solar panels on the front of the lens, similar to those on a standard calculator. This allows the welder to start and stop welding without having to constantly flip their helmet up and down.
Auto darkening helmets are also available with a variety of features: Variable shade helmets will allow the welder to change the darkness of the filter lens shade. Sensitivity adjustments allow the welder to adjust how sensitive they want the sensor to pick up a welding arc. For instance, if someone is welding nearby, the sensitivity can be turned down so that their arc does not cause your helmet to auto darken by mistake. Lastly, there are delay adjustments that allow the welder to set a longer/shorter period of time before the lens auto darkens once the arc is detected.
